What is Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massage is a type of massage in which firm pressure and slow strokes are applied to the body to reach deeper layers of muscle and its surrounding connective tissue (fascia).
Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage dislodges scar tissue and breaks down muscle “knots” or adhesions (areas of stiff and painful tissue) that can impede circulation and lead to pain, limited range of motion, and inflammation. It also releases bodily toxins that have built up over time.
Does Deep Tissue Massage Hurt?
You might feel some discomfort as the massage therapist works through problem areas. However, massage shouldn’t be a painful experience. Thus, you should let your massage therapist know right away if you’re feeling any pain.
Other Types of Massage
Deep tissue massage might not be the best technique for everyone since its powerful strokes could aggravate certain skin, musculoskeletal, or other body conditions. If you’ve been injured recently or have any chronic conditions, check with your doctor before having a massage.
Other types of massage to consider include:
- Swedish massage, which is the most common form of massage and uses a gentler technique
- Hot stone massage, which is a relaxation-focused technique that uses heated stones to enhance the benefit
- Aromatherapy massage, which uses essential oils as part of the treatment process
- Trigger point massage, which targets chronic pain, injuries, or other painful conditions
